joe jonas and demi lovato teen vogue/ MORE JEMI NEWS!

They're both talented, good-looking, and famous, but Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato don't exactly have the world on a string: Simpler pleasures, of the sort afforded to other kids their age, sometimes elude them. Earlier this year, when the Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam costars decided to test the romantic possibilities of their rock-solid friendship, they felt compelled to do so in public; when they broke up just a few months later, Joe announced it by issuing a statement, and Demi—always true to her loyal fans—decided to confirm the details on Twitter. "I kind of learned throughout this whole experience that having my private life public isn't as awesome as it might seem," the seventeen-year-old says with a rueful little laugh.
Even the process of scheduling their pre-split sit-down with Teen Vogue, for example—at which the then-couple agreed to interview each other—was complicated by their inability to appear together without risking mass hysteria. But for the most part, they seem to be fairly at ease with all the attention: After a daylong press junket, Demi's famous laugh is still as loud as ever, and Joe, 20, is chipper and ready to chat. (Naturally, they were more subdued when they spoke to Teen Vogue again after their breakup, but more on that in a bit.)

Demi Lovato: What's your favorite thing about me?

Joe Jonas: Do you really want me to answer that? Why don't you tell me: On set, what was your favorite snack? Because I think I already know.

Demi Lovato: The tomato-cheese quesadillas. Do you remember those? They were so good. What did you think it was?

Joe Jonas: Cheese sticks.

Demi Lovato: We didn't have cheese sticks!

Joe Jonas: Well, for some reason, I imagine you eating a lot of cheese sticks.

Demi Lovato: [Laughs] Thanks.

Joe Jonas: They just seem like something you would like.

Demi Lovato: I do love cheese sticks.

Joe Jonas: There you go.

Demi Lovato: So what was the hardest thing for you about making Camp Rock 2?

Joe Jonas: Finding time to sleep. There were so many things to do. If I wasn't on set, I was cooking or working out. What about you?

Demi Lovato: I think it was balancing sleep too. Even though I wasn't working out, I was dancing, sometimes for hours on end.

Joe Jonas: Have you ever been to a real summer camp?

Demi Lovato: Yeah, I went to church camp when I was in the sixth grade. What about you?

Joe Jonas: I went to sleepaway camp seven years in a row. I was such a pro. We had these relay races at the end of every summer, and the majority of the competitions were eating contests. Sometimes you would have to eat, like, a whole can of Spam; once I ate four raw potatoes. I didn't really recover for weeks after that.

Demi Lovato: Eww!

Joe Jonas: In some ways, making this movie felt like camp all over again. During breaks, we weren't hanging out in trailers—we were going down to the lake or playing in the woods.

Demi Lovato: We met when I auditioned for Jonas. What was your first impression of me?

Joe Jonas: I saw right away how smiley you were. Obviously, I didn't have a say in who was going to be cast, but it ended up being a good thing that you didn't get that role. If you had, you wouldn't have been in Camp Rock.

TEEN VOGUE: You guys were friends before you started dating. Whose idea was it to take the next step?

Joe Jonas: Mine.

TEEN VOGUE: So, Demi, you didn't already fancy him?

Demi Lovato: I had always fancied him. Want to know what actually happened? One night I asked him, "What is the deal? We're perfect for each other. What are you doing?" And he was like, "This is really awkward. I have to go."

Joe Jonas: I needed time to think.

Demi Lovato: And I thought, Great, I just ruined a friendship. But then the next day, he came knocking at my door.

Joe Jonas: Once she confronted me, I kind of confronted myself.

TEEN VOGUE: Joe's been in a couple of very high-profile relationships—with Taylor Swift, and Camilla Belle—and Demi's dated Trace Cyrus. Was it ever hard to see each other with other people?

Demi Lovato: Every girlfriend he had, I always wanted to have a friendship with, because I felt like if she was worthy enough to be with him, then she must be great. It sucked, watching, but I was always happy for him.

Joe Jonas: It wasn't easy.

Demi Lovato: Sometimes it was like, "So my boyfriend is so awesome." "Well, my girlfriend is really great." "Good for you!" [laughs]

TEEN VOGUE: You've sung together frequently. Do you like the same kinds of music?

Demi Lovato: I sent Joe some music from one of my favorite bands, Neon Indian. And he, in turn, introduced me to Michael Buble. I also showed him who the Jonas Brothers were, and Joe's been a fan of them ever since.

Joe Jonas: Well, I used to like the Jonas Brothers.

Demi Lovato: And then they became mainstream.

Joe Jonas: She listens to harder music sometimes than I would. She'll say, "Listen

They ALL are Ordinary People/RANT!

They ALL are Ordinary People/RANT!

Okay, so, I was thinking with everything happening, I realize that a lot of people hate on celebrities. Some just hate the fact they are famous, some just hate that they make more money then them/can get more girls or boys/have more fans then their favorite band. But I don't think anyone realizes that all of these celebrities are ordinary people. Yeah, they have more money, so? Money doesn't buy you fans or happiness. The people around you and how you act is what gets you happiness and fans. And no one really realizes this.

And now, I'm going to talk about each celebrity that is on this thing ^^ and tell you what I feel about them.

Nick Jonas: Everyone knows I love JB. So of course I don't really say anything bad about Nick, or most of them for that matter, but I need to get my true feelings out about each of these people so here it goes: I love him. In all seriousness, I do. If I met him, I'd probably die. AND I would really like to meet him or really any of his brothers/band members. I hate the fact that some people get to meet them and they didn't do shit. They aren't that big of a fan but they get the meet and greet passes, the best tickets, or something like that. And guess what? I find this FUCKING RETARDED. It's not fair to some of us fans who have been through everything with them and we still haven't met/been to a concert of them. I get sooo pissed off knowing a bitch just met one of them and I still haven't. Ugh. Okay, moving on.... I love Nick all around and hope that I do get to meet him :3

Miley Cyrus: Now, I know Miley gets a lot of crap from everyone and is hated on a lot, trust me, I use to be on of those girls that would list reasons of why I hate her. But now I've grown up and moved on. I don't really hate her, but I don't care for her. She's okay and all. Yes, there are some things she does that get me really pissed off but most of the time she's okay with me. I just really hope everyone kinda just stops picking on her. She's going to snap at some point and just go insane. And I don't care what she says, even if she stays off the internet for the rest of her life, she still hears what everyone calls her. And I know that after being picked on for so long, you just.... crack. You start to become paranoid and everything you do, you have to second guess and hope no one is going to be mad at you for doing it. So, let's just hope it doesn't come down to that point, because she seems like an okay person and doesn't really deserve all the shit she goes through.

Taylor Swift: Ahh, so much to say about her, so little time. I'm not sure if you guys know how I feel about this girl but.... I don't like her. I just... don't. And some of her fans aren't any better. I just think she kinda got too crazy when she and Joe broke up. I think she falls to fast for guys and then doesn't realize that guys don't fall that quickly in love with someone they just met. And also, she need to calm down about writing a song for every guy that screws her over. Trust me, being crazy doesn't get you boyfriends, it gets you best friends that have to help you get a boyfriend. And just because she writes sad songs about boys doesn't mean every girl is going to be on her side. I've had my heart broken before, but I got over it, not quickly but over time. But anyway, I think she kinda gets hated on too much too. I mean, over all she seems okay. She just needs to work on her voice a little bit. She doesn't suck at singing, but she has her bad moments, and so does every singer too. But yeah, she okay I guess.

Ashley Tisdale: Um, I like Ashley. She seems like a really awesome person and all but I don't think anyone gives her enough credit. Actually, I don't think anyone gives anyone on the Disney Channel enough credit. Yes, they star in some really weird/stupid movies sometimes but that doesn't mean they can't act. It's not right to judge them just because everyhting they do is PG-13 and not NC-17. Being an asshole tv star isn't going to get you good gigs. Being a great actor does. Anyway, I like her and she has a good voice too I guess. And High School Musical 2 was the best ahaha

Demi Lovato: I don't get it. Why do people hate her? Really why? Because she's annoying. That's a good reason right :/ No, it's not. I'm a fan of her and all and yes sometimes she is a little weird and all but over all she's alright in my book. Just stop talking about her. JUST STOP TALKING ABOUT EVERYONE! Get over yourself and stop being an asshole. Stop trying to find reasons to hate everyone and find somethings that you might like about someone. Just hating people makes you seems like a loser how needs a life. And don't comment on this if your going to be like I don't care what people think about me blah blah blah... Cause guess what? I don't care. Continue to hate all these celebrities, it's life right? Just remember, you only have one.

Joe Jonas: I'm not sure I feel about him anymore. He's just been pissing me off late

Pumpkin-shaped cinnabar container decorated with basket weave and leaves

Pumpkin-shaped cinnabar container decorated with basket weave and leaves

Collections and personal treasures remind us of travels and past pleasures.

Chinese Cinnabar, layer upon layer of lacquer. Then intricate floral and basket texture are carved in. Cinnabar speaks to me, even writing about it brings me to tears. A pumpkin perhaps.

Although lacquer is used in many Asian cultures, the art of carving lacquer is unique to China. Lacquer is the resin (or sap) of a family of trees (rhus verniciflua) found throughout southern China. It is an amazing material that hardens when exposed to oxygen and becomes a natural plastic that is resistant to water and can withstand heat and certain acids.

Known in China during the late Neolithic period (ca. 5000–ca. 2000 B.C.), lacquer was an important artistic medium from the sixth century B.C. to the second century A.D. and was often colored with minerals such as carbon (black), orpiment (yellow), and cinnabar (red) and used to paint the surfaces of sculptures and vessels. There is little evidence for the use of lacquer in China from the second to the eighth century: eighth- to tenth-century examples are often beautifully constructed but with simple shapes and little or no decoration. In the twelfth century, however, a new class of luxury lacquer objects—carved lacquer—appeared. Carved lacquer, which is predominantly red, is often known as “cinnabar” lacquer, a reference to the use of this powdered mercury sulphide as the primary colorant.

Like all lacquer objects, carved pieces have a base that is usually made of turned wood: it is the lacquer that is worked and not the underlying material. In the carved-lacquer technique, multiple layers (often thirty or thirty-five, but at times up to two hundred) are applied onto a substructure in the shape of a box or dish, exposed to air and dried, and carved to create lush geometric motifs, engaging scenes of figures enjoying nature, and lively birds flitting among flowers. In early examples, layers of yellow and green lacquer are interspersed among the predominant red to give a subtle depth to the overall design that is set against a plain background. The extraordinary narrative scenes found on lacquers of the late fourteenth and fifteenth century, on the other hand, have delicately carved backgrounds in which different geometric designs are used to show earth, water, and sky. In addition, in a related technique, a red lacquer background is carved with thin lines that are filled with gold, gold powder, or lacquer that has been tinted black, green, or yellow.

This exhibition, which celebrates the Museum’s collection and includes significant loans from the Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, showcases approximately fifty examples dating from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. It includes several recently acquired works as well as small boxes for holding incense or cosmetics and larger containers used for papers, scrolls, or presenting gifts. It also presents an important eighteenth-century screen that has recently been restored and is being displayed for the first time.

I love handcrafted work, whether hammered silver or carefully applied layers of lacquer in Chinese Cinnabar. These are my favorite body armor... the pieces that make me feel powerful!

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents Earth (The Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race

Where do we come from? Who created us? Why are we here? These questions have puzzled us since the dawn of time, but when it became apparent to Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show that the world was about to end, they embarked on a massive mission to write a book that summed up the human race: What we looked like; what we accomplished; our achievements in society, government, religion, science and culture -- all in a tome of 238 pages with lots of color photos, graphs and charts.

After two weeks of hard work, they had their book. EARTH (The Book) is the definitive guide to our species. With their trademark wit, irreverence, and intelligence, Stewart and his team posthumously answer all of life's most hard-hitting questions, completely unburdened by objectivity, journalistic integrity, or even accuracy.

The before and after application of makeup on a model. Just so you know.
The camera, chair and reflector were all carefully kept in place as Elle sat in for the "before" shot and then left to get makeup done for the "after" photo. Small adjustments to the head position were made during both parts of the shoot. Even so, I would have preferred a hidden head rest to make this spot on. There were a few moles removed on the makeup side to smooth this out, but it mostly is makeup changes.
